“They’re coming for us in the courthouses, they’re coming for us. But we are here. We. Are. Here,” Brian Michael Smith said in part of his speech as he accepted 911 Lone Star’s GLAAD Award win for Outstanding Drama Series.

As an awards event that recognizes LGBTQ+ representation in media, Fox’s tv series, 911 Lone Star has been nominated for a GLAAD Award every year since 2021, and this year, won the award for its third season, which aired in 2022.

The show follows the lives of first responders in Austin, Texas, and follows fire captain Owen Strand (Rob Lowe) as he relocates himself and his son, firefighter later turned paramedic, T.K. Strand (Ronen Rubinstein) from NYC to Austin to reopen the 126 fire house. T.K., who went through a nuclear bad proposal to his boyfriend, and subsequent substance overdose, meets police officer Carlos Reyes (Rafael Silva), and the two begin hooking up in season one. In season two, T.K. and Carlos are officially boyfriends, and by the end of season three, become engaged. Now, in season four, T.K. and Carlos are on track to get married, with hurdles along the way.

On screen T.K. and Carlos are gay, and in real life, Rubinstein and Silva are both part of the LGBTQ+ community. Silva is gay, while Rubinstein came out as bisexual in April 2021.

They are joined on the show by Trans actor, Smith, who portrays a Trans male firefighter at the 126.

Rubinstein, Silva and Smith were in attendance at the 34th Annual GLAAD Media Awards on March 30, 2023 as they graciously accepted their show’s award.

“I appreciate the opportunity to come into the homes of millions of Americans who may not know that they know a Trans person and to show them that I’m a real person, and I matter. Just like everybody in this room matters. And I just want to say to the people who are home watching, to show people on Hulu who feel like you are alone, you are NOT alone,” Smith said in his speech.

“I’m here, my brothers are here, everybody in this room is here. We are fighting for you, and we are going to use our joy, we’re going to use our talent, we’re going to use our heart, we are going to use our art to tell you that we are not going quietly into the night,” he added.

Rubinstein and Silva coordinated their outfits for the awards, as both were styled by Rubinstein’s long-time stylist, Chaise Dennis. They were clad in black outfits from Saint Laurent, with matching pants and they wore sustainable diamond jewellery from Vrai, with matching bracelets and rings.

Smith was clad in a white suit with a pink shirt by the brand J.Lindeberg.

“This was truly a surreal moment, one that I will cherish forever. The biggest shoutout to everyone that helps bring 911 Lone Star to life, from the writers to the cast and crew THANK YOU!” Rubinstein said as part of a post on Instagram.

As 911 Lone Star gears up for the big wedding between T.K. and Carlos, the show will continue to portray and represent the LGBTQ+ community as long as it continues to appear on screen.
